There are a lot of features for disabling notifications. You can turn off any kind of notification sound or icon if you want.
The desktop app for Mac and PC can be used to turn off the notifications.
You have two options if you want to stop receiving notifications from someone.
Block them is the easiest way to do it. You can see the messages at any time, but you'll need to click a button to see them.
You can block someone on desktop by right-clicking their usernames and selecting Block.

The only way to silence another user is to navigate to their private messages with them and click their name in the left sidebar. Pick how long you want them to be muted for from the drop down menu.
You won't get notifications from messages inside of a channel when it's turned off. You will see the red notification dot if someone mentions you.
