Ghost stories have been around for years. The latest tale to get a Hollywood remake is Henry James' classic 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw in Universal Pictures' upcoming project The Turning.
Brought to you by The Conjuring writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes, The Turning stars Finn Wolfhard, of Stranger Things fame, as a bizarre and generally terrifying child alongside Brooklynn Prince ( The Florida Project) who plays his younger sister. Mackenzie Davis also stars as the nanny tasked with raising the two disturbed orphans.
In the trailer posed above, Davis' character doesn't fully realize what she's getting into by taking on the job, and soon finds herself being haunted by the frightening secrets the children, and the house, are harbouring. The imagery grows more disturbing: ghost hands, spiders slithering into mouths, heavy breathing, horses galloping into ominous mists, Wolfhard clanging menacingly on a drum set. "I know what you're afraid of," the teenager says. "Keeping the lights on won't keep you safe."
Directed by Floria Sigismondi ( The Handmaid's Tale), The Turning is scheduled for a January 24, 2020 release date.
The second season of Mike Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House, tilted The Haunting of Bly Manor, will also be inspired by James' The Turn of the Screw novel.
