Omaha man accused in a ‘dine and dash’ falls asleep with car running, is arrested on suspicion of DUI

An Omaha man accused of dining and dashing at an Old Market restaurant was arrested outside the business on suspicion of drunken driving after he fell asleep with his car running.

The incident occurred about 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Spaghetti Works at 11th and Howard Streets, Omaha police said. A 45-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman had eaten lunch at the restaurant.

Servers called 911 when they became concerned about the couple’s bill because the man left the restaurant and the woman went into the restroom. Police officers dispatched to the restaurant were flagged down and led to a car stopped in traffic with its engine running and in gear.

The driver, who was identified as the man who had failed to pay his check, was sleeping with his head on his chest. Officers shut off the car, removed the keys and woke the driver.

About that time, the woman left the restaurant and identified herself to police as the man’s wife. In addition to the man’s DUI arrest, each was cited on suspicion of theft of services.
