Cops in truck run over two beachgoers on Long Island

A cop in a pickup truck accidentally ran over a pair of beachgoers in Long Island on Sunday night , officials said.

The cop was on his way to the water around 8 p.m. to warn swimmers there were no lifeguards on duty when his truck rolled over two people who were laying under a beach blanket.

The two were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.

The officer has more than 20 years on the job, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

It has been at least eight years since anyone on the beach in the Nassau County city was hit by a police car.
